Nestled on the historic lands of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Mississauga Peoples, the Municipality of Clarington is a vibrant area with a rich history dating back millennia. The first European settlers, the Burks, Conants, and Trulls families, arrived from England in 1794, establishing communities in what are now Bowmanville and Courtice. The completion of the road between Toronto and Kingston and the arrival of the Grand Trunk Railway in 1856 spurred rapid growth, transforming Bowmanville into a bustling town by Confederation in 1867.

The 20th century saw waves of new settlers from Britain, Europe, and later the Middle East, Asia, South America, the Caribbean, and Central America. In 1974, the Municipality of Clarington was officially incorporated, blending the names of Clarke and Darlington townships.
